Technology on Campus
Other Resources on Campus
To be successful in your program at ISU you will need computer skills and computer access. Computer and Internet usage have become critical factors in academic success. The computer is essential for preparing papers, conducting statistical analyses and connecting to the library. You will use e-mail and the World Wide Web regularly both in and out of class. Some classes will require other technologies such as newsgroups, listservs, or specialized software applications.
To find out more about policies regarding personal computers, off-campus accessibility and personal internet access, please visit the ISU Technology Web site at http://www.ilstu.edu/home/technology/.
We highly recommend that you become familiar with the ISU website. From the campus home page located at http://www.ilstu.edu/ you can explore ISU via an interactive map, link to the library, follow ISU athletic teams, discover scheduled cultural events, research ISU programs, services and policies and connect to extra-University sites.
As a student at ISU you are eligible for Internet services including an electronic (e-mail) account at no charge. To access services you must go through an application process to validate a University Logon ID (ULID). Through this ULID, students get a private e-mail account, space for hosting a personal Web site, space for storing documents and the ability to participate in other Internet services such as UseNet Newsgroups.
To validate your ULID on a campus computer, go to http://www.ilstu.edu/ulid/ and follow the instructions from "Technology on Campus." All users are responsible for reading and abiding by the Appropriate Use Policy. E-mail accounts also can be activated at this web site: https://secure.ilstu.edu/ulid/. If you have trouble activating your account call the University Computer Help Desk at (309) 438-HELP.
A special package of Internet software has been produced to provide consistent and easy installation across campus. The package includes some of the best freeware and site-licensed software available including an e-mail client and WWW browser. Quick links are provided to a variety of Illinois State University services including the library and dial-up system. The package is available free of charge both in Windows and Macintosh versions.
To download Internet Tools visit http://www.ilstu.edu/helpdesk/downloads.
Computer viruses can cause major losses of productivity and can maliciously hamper or destroy computer applications or files. Illinois State University has an agreement in place for McAfee virus protection software for Macintosh and Windows.
This software is available free of charge to all students for their personal computers and may be downloaded by going to http://www.ilstu.edu/helpdesk/downloads/.
