Women's Studies Certificate Offered by the School of Social Work and the Women's Studies Program

A Women's Studies Certificate enhances the social work major by integrating a working knowledge of gender issues with the generalist BSW degree.

To receive the Certificate, students must satisfactorily complete all core course work required for the BSW degree in addition to:

1. All requirements for the minor in Women's and Gender Studies (21 credit hours), including the following courses:

  • WGS 120: Women Gender and Society
  • ENG 160: Women in Literature
  • PHI 246: Feminist Political Philosophy
  • HIS 261 or 262: History of Women in the United States to 1865 or since 1865

2. Nine credit hours of designated Women Studies electives. Recommended elective courses would include, but are not limited to:

  • FCS 233: Family Economic Resources
  • CJS 339: Women in Criminal Justice
  • HIS 330: The Family in History
  • PSY 305: Women in Psychology
  • SOC 341: Sociology of Sex Roles
  • SOC 366: Contemporary Social Movements
  • SOC 123: Human Sexuality
  • WGS 390: Interdisciplinary Research in Women's Studies

3. Successful completion of the social work field practicum during the senior year in a pre-approved agency that focuses on Women's Studies
