Students graduating with a major in Social Work must complete certain University requirements as well as social work departmental requirements. Currently, we do not offer a social work minor.
University Requirements
University graduation requirements are published in the Undergraduate Catalog and include:
- Complete 120 total credit hours.
- Satisfy the General Education Program requirements by completing either:
- the Illinois State's General Education Program.
- the Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum, available through the Illinois Articulation Initiative. This program, designed for transfer students, is a statewide agreement between participating colleges and universities.
- a baccalaureate-oriented associates degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Complete specific BSW requirements. Students must choose this through a foreign language requirement as demonstrated by successful completion of Foreign Languages 115 (or equivalent) OR must complete one additional three-hour natural science, mathematics, statistics, or technology course beyond the General Education Program requirements.
- All graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences must satisfy a foreign language requirement that may be met by three years of a single foreign language in high school or completion of the second semester or higher of college-level foreign language (FOR 112 or articulated course) with a grade of "C" or better or equivalent proficiency as determined by examination. American Sign Language may be used to fulfill this requirement by transfer credit or by proficiency.
- Senior college hours (courses numbered 200 or above) must total at least 42 hours.
- The grade point average for all courses taken at Illinois State must be maintained at 2.5 or higher and a grade of "C" or higher must be earned in all major required courses.
- At least 30 of the last 60 hours completed toward the baccalaureate degree must be earned at Illinois State.
- Each student must pass an examination of the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Illinois, and the proper use of the American flag.
- All students must have successfully completed a course designated as a course in the cultures and traditions of societies or peoples from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin American, or Indigenous Peoples of the World.
School of Social Work Requirements
In addition to meeting the University's degree requirements above for the baccalaureate degree, to graduate with a BSW, students must be formally accepted for admission to the Social Work major and:
- Successfully complete 69 semester hours of required courses as outlined in the BSW Plan of Study.
- Successfully complete the Integrative Field Assignment, which is a comprehensive exit requirement that assesses students' integration of the baccalaureate social work curriculum and their ability to apply that knowledge to practice.
