All BSW and MSW course syllabi are developed by the appropriate curricula sequence committees. Syllabi are formatted according to School standards and include the following sections:
Part-time Instructors may not make changes in the first 5 items, however, if you decide to change item #6, the required text, you must secure the approval of the appropriate program director. In the latter 6 items, you have the flexibility to make changes to the content to best reflect your unique teaching approach. Please note that all changes to course syllabi should be communicated to the appropriate program director before the start of the semester in which you teach.
The syllabus you receive for your course will be the syllabus for the last time the course was taught and an electronic copy will be sent to you. This syllabus will include the required textbook and possibly other required/optional readings. In most instances this textbook will have been selected and approved by the appropriate curriculum sequence committee and will be used in other sections of the course, if applicable. If you wish to use another textbook please communicate this to the appropriate program director (BSW, MSW or Field) who needs to approve this selection. If you do not have a desk copy of the required textbook, contact the Office Manager for assistance in how to receive desk copies of adopted texts.
In an effort to maintain uniformity across the curriculum, the School of Social Work uses the following grading scale:
A 90 to 100%
B 80 to 89%
C 70 to 79%
D 60 to 69%
F 0 to 59%
Submission of Final Course Grades
To submit final course grades, an on-line grade reporting system is found on the iCAMPUS portal. The deadline for submission of grades is located on the university calendar, located at http://www.ilstu.edu/calendar. Scroll down to the bottom and you will see the current semester dates.
Completing on-line grade submission requires that you have a ULID and a password. Please call the Office of the University Registrar at (309) 438-2188 if you have any questions.
The School of Social Work is committed to developing and sustaining excellence for its educational programs. Doing so involves five curriculum sequence committees within the School: Field, HBSE, Research, Policy, and Practice. Each curriculum sequence committee is responsible for reviewing content and structure of BSW and MSW courses falling under its purview. All curricula changes are “officially” passed by the School Committee of the whole.
The School welcomes input on curricula and course matters from part-time instructors, especially if you are teaching a course in your area of specialized expertise. Please contact the sequence chair of any sequence committee if you wish to participate as a committee member. On the other hand, if you wish to give your comments, queries, or suggestions, feel free to approach any one of the following:
The Baccalaureate Social Work degree program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). All part-time instructors must be familiar with CSWE’s policy on BSW and MSW education, which can be found online at http://www.cswe.org.
Our School's BSW curriculum is highly structured. Students cannot deviate from taking the courses in the proper sequence if they plan to receive a BSW degree in two years after admission to the Program in the fall semester of their junior year.
The BSW plan of study may be found at http://www.socialwork.ilstu.edu/.
The Master of Social Work degree program is also accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). All part-time instructors must be familiar with CSWE’s policy on BSW and MSW education, which can be found online at http://www.cswe.org.
The MSW program offers two concentrations of study. The first is Child and Family Practice, with an emphasis on agency-based practice, with and on behalf of families and children who are at risk.
The second concentration, added in 2008, is School Social Work. MSW students who choose the School Social Work concentration take coursework that prepares them to do their advanced practicum in a school setting for one academic year. Upon graduation, they are ready to take their Type 73 certificate examination through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), allowing them to obtain employment as a School Social Worker.
Sample plans of study options including those for advanced standing students may be found at http://www.socialwork.ilstu.edu/.
