Social work is an applied science that prepares graduates as generalists in the profession. In addition to social work theories and skills, you will study Math and Statistics, Human Biology, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, and History. The social work major sequence includes five main areas of study in the junior and senior years:

  1. human behavior in the social environment
  2. practice skills with individuals, groups, families, and communities with emphases on working with diverse populations at each level,
  3. social welfare policy,
  4. research and statistics, and
  5. field practice.

What can I do with a Social Work degree?

Careers opportunities in social work are numerous and include such areas as mental health, health services, substance abuse, school social work, local, state, and federal government, corrections, homelessness outreach and services, services in international settings, domestic violence treatment and prevention, hospice services, and many others. More than half of Illinois State social work graduates in 2005 were offered a position by the agency where they completed their field practicum.
